If you are a lover of live music, or a musician yourself, you will want to know where it can be heard and where performers can be seen, and if you are new to the island of Tenerife you may find it is a very different scene to what is on offer in many countries such as the UK.
In the south of Tenerife in the tourist resorts like Las Americas and Los Cristianos, what is billed as live music at most bars and venues often just means a singer with pre-recorded backing tracks that they perform over. Guitarists, musicians with instruments and bands are a something of a rarity in the venues in the south of Tenerife.
However, many of the cabaret singers on Tenerife are very good though, and many specialise in doing a tribute to particular acts such as Neil Diamond, as covered by Charlie Hodge. Charlie Hodge, as well as other acts like Cy Benson, Hollie Bourne, Robbie Allen, Eddie Hastings and Young Shelly often appear at Flicks Bar, Amarilla Bay in Costa del Silencio, in Tenerife south. Flicks Bar also stages a regular Sunday afternoon cabaret.

Agua Garcia – a charming village in Tenerife North |
Agua Garcia is a charming village in the north of Tenerife that lies tucked away in the mountains and forests above Tacoronte, whilst being only a short run by road to the busy Los Rodeos airport.
Agua Garcia is a “must-see” for nature lovers and anyone who likes to explore the wilder countryside of Tenerife because the luxuriant forests around Agua Garcia are some of the best examples of laurisilva woodland on the island. There is so much wildlife to be found in the area that a book - El Bosque De Aqua Garcia by Maria del Carmen Brito and Vicente-Lope Lucia – was written and published all about it, along with information on the trails and pathways through the woods and mountains.

Exotic flowering vines and creepers in Tenerife |
Tenerife parks and gardens are always ablaze with colour and often this is because of the wonderful displays of blooms on the many types of creeper and vine that ramble well over fences, pergolas and walls.
Perhaps best known of these is the Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis and b. glabra), which grows fast and comes in a variety of fabulous colours such as purple, red, pink, salmon-pink, orange, yellow and white. The flower is actually small and insignificant but the surrounding bract is what catches the eye. The Bougainvillea is also known as Paper Flower from the consistency of these bracts. Bougainvilleas withstand drought well and accept most soils and are excellent for creating a veritable cloud of colour on Tenerife.

Masca – the Shangri-La of Tenerife |
Masca is also known as the “Forgotten Village,” and until 1991, there was no road to get to it in its mountainous location in the Parque Rural of Teno area of the northwest of Tenerife. Because of being so cut-off until recently, the village of Masca has remained unspoiled and is like stepping back in time, making it a “must-see” for all visitors to Tenerife island.

Fruit and vegetables on Tenerife |
Many people, especially those who only know the southern parts, think that Tenerife farmers only grow bananas, grapes, tomatoes and potatoes, which of course they do, but are unaware of many of the other fruit and vegetable crops grown on the island. This is understandable because banana plantations conspicuously cover vast amounts of land, as do grape vineyards, and nearly all restaurants sell “papas arugadas” as a Canarian traditional dish of potatoes cooked in salty water.
