An English country garden in Tenerife |
Many British people who become residents of Tenerife like to carry on experiencing the culture from the UK in their new island home and besides obvious things like wanting to be able to eat British food and listen to English language radio it extends into a desire for garden plants and flowers to flourish in their gardens and terraces.
Fortunately, with a bit of planning and plenty of water there are a large range of garden flowers and bushes and trees that will grow perfectly well in Tenerife. This is especially the case in the north of the island or in the mountains but even in the hot south of Tenerife flowers like the Rose (Rosa spp) and the Marigold (Calendula officinalis) will grow well if they get enough water.

Plenty to see and do in Tenerife’s capital Santa Cruz |
Santa Cruz, the bustling capital of Tenerife is situated on the coast of the island in the north and has plenty to offer with places to visit and things to do as well as boasting an excellent shopping centre. Santa Cruz is in an ideal location with the sea in front and the Anaga mountains sheltering it from above.
One of the landmarks of Santa Cruz is the Tenerife Auditorium (Auditorio de Tenerife), which stands shining in the sun like a gigantic helmet, and is easily visible from the main bus station. The Tenerife Auditorium was designed by Santiago Calatrava, and is the main performing arts venue on the island, staging big concerts by internationally famous names from all genres of music, from rock and pop through to chamber music and classical. Van Morrison, Jethro Tull and Paul Young are examples of acts that have performed there.

Las Aguas – a village with a beach and swimming pool |
Las Aguas (The Waters) is a charming coastal village next to San Juan de la Rambla in the north of Tenerife. The road into it is lined with palm trees on one side and leads downhill from San Juan de la Rambla all the way to the seafront. On the other side of this road there is a banana plantation and farmland terraces.
Las Aguas is the kind of place on Tenerife that you could easily pass by unless you knew it was there or found it by chance, but it is well worth visiting. The beach is mostly black rocks and pebbles and with a small islet rock just out in the sea but there is a ‘piscina’ saltwater swimming pool at the end of the road where people who enjoy bathing can go.

The Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco), or Drago as it is known in Spanish, is a species you can’t visit Tenerife without failing to notice. Dragon Trees are grown in parks and gardens all around the island and many of the large ones are most impressive with their strange, almost prehistoric appearance, with twisted branches forming the head and their crowns of spiky leaves.
The Drago Milenario in Icod de los Vinos is said to be between 1,000 and 3,000 years old, and this mighty specimen, which grows surrounded by the Parque del Drago is one of the most-visited tourist attractions on Tenerife. The huge Dragon Tree itself has become a symbol of the island and appears in countless guidebooks, on postcards and even on T-shirts. |
