The beaches and seafront of Puerto de la Cruz |
The northern Tenerife coastal resort of Puerto de la Cruz has much to attract visitors to the island and it boasts a very extensive seafront with several excellent black sand as well as rocky beaches and a choice of swimming pools.
Playa Jardín, which is on the same side of Puerto de la Cruz as the very popular Loro Parque zoological park, has as its name suggests a series of gardens with pathways and borders filled with exotic flowers, bushes and trees. There is plenty of room on this Tenerife beach, which many sunbathers enjoy. Lanzarote artist and architectural designer, César Manrique, created Playa Jardín in 1992 having already been the inspiration behind the construction of the very popular Lago Martiánez lido further along the Puerto de la Cruz seafront.

Tierra del Trigo – a unique Tenerife mountain village |
Tierra del Trigo is a pretty village in the mountains overlooking La Isla Baja (“Low Island”) area of Tenerife northwest, and a tower stands on a hillside overseeing both the village and the valleys below. Tierra del Trigo means “Land of Wheat” in Spanish, and this is one of the crops that have been grown in the area.
Tierra del Trigo is 3km from the Tenerife town of El Tanque where the road to it is clearly signposted and the tower can be seen in the direction you would take. This tower was apparently built as a defence against pirates and a lookout point over the Los Silos coastline below.

The Poinsettia – a Christmas flower of Tenerife |
Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are used worldwide as a symbol of the festive season and although the plant is originally from the Pacific coast of Mexico, some parts of central southern Mexico, and other areas in Guatemala, it is commonly grown in Tenerife in parks and gardens. In the north of the island of Tenerife the Poinsettia does particularly well and in autumn and winter makes a spectacular display along many a roadside, on roundabouts and in borders.

Freshwater wildlife of Tenerife |
Although Tenerife has very little in the way of naturally occurring permanent sources of fresh water there is a surprising amount of aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife that thrives on the island and that would be of interest to naturalists.
The reservoirs and water tanks for the irrigation of the farmland are the main places where freshwater animals and plants can live but also there are ponds and water gardens in parks as well as in private gardens that provide homes to wildlife. Golf courses often have pools as well.

Los Silos – a town in Tenerife’s Isla Baja |
Los Silos is a charming coastal town and a municipal borough found in the northwest of Tenerife in the area known as Isla Baja (low island) and is often described as the “Secret of Tenerife.” Garachico, Buenavista and El Tanque are also included in the Isla Baja area.
Los Silos gets its name from three silos that were made around the year 1509, and were needed to store the abundant cereal crops that were harvested in this area of Tenerife. Los Silos, today, has stayed very close to its agricultural past and has many banana plantations surrounding the town. It also boasts an excellent organic fruit and vegetable shop on the roadway signposted for paths to El Monte de Agua and Las Cuevas Negras.
