Las Aguas – a village with a beach and swimming pool
Written by Steve Andrews
Las Aguas village in TenerifeLas Aguas (The Waters) is a charming coastal village next to San Juan de la Rambla in the north of Tenerife. The road into it is lined with palm trees on one side and leads downhill from San Juan de la Rambla all the way to the seafront. On the other side of this road there is a banana plantation and farmland terraces.

Las Aguas is the kind of place on Tenerife that you could easily pass by unless you knew it was there or found it by chance, but it is well worth visiting. The beach is mostly black rocks and pebbles and with a small islet rock just out in the sea but there is a ‘piscina’ saltwater swimming pool at the end of the road where people who enjoy bathing can go. Beach in Las Aguas in Tenerife Next to the swimming pool is a café and bar and there are several more restaurants and bars along the seafront area. The Tenerife coastline stretches up towards Puerto de la Cruz, whilst above the area is the main road and the volcanic rocky cliffs that tower over it.

Cliff in Las Aguas in TenerifeSan Juan de la Rambla itself is a small but attractive Tenerife coastal town with many typical old Canarian houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and the focal point of the Church of San Juan Bautista (John the Baptist), who is the patron saint of the area. It seems very fitting that the church of John the Baptist is so close to the village of Las Aguas with its very own swimming pool in which would-be bathers can enjoy a dip.

Las Aguas costSan Juan de la Rambla, with its turn off to Las Aguas, is on the main Tenerife North road to Puerto de la Cruz that skirts the coast coming up from Icod de los Vinos and just past El Buen Paso and Santo Domingo. The municipality of San Juan de la Rambla is located in the district of Icod and has an area of some 23 square kilometres and a population of 4,500.

Road to Las AguasSeveral of the excellent Tenerife Titsa buses stop at San Juan de la Rambla. You can get the 107 from Buenavista to Santa Cruz, the 108 from Icod de los Vinos to Santa Cruz, the 363 from Buenavista to Puerto de la Cruz or the 364 from La Guancha to San Juan de la Rambla.

Looking down from the main Tenerife North road above you can get a splendid view of the seafront and the swimming pool in Las Aguas. It’s the sort of view that makes you want to actually go and visit the place!
